Life's a Beach
When you are renting a house, decorating isn't always easy. When it came to the rest of this house, life really was a beach. It was a breeze. It came naturally.
But when it came to the guest bath, not so beachy. Or maybe, the problem was that it was TOO beachy. The bathroom is wallpapered in a beach theme. I've never decorated anything like that. And I can't remove the wallpaper...
I struggled hard with this bathroom. And since it's the bathroom I use, it was literally right in my face. So yes, I had a lot of time to contemplate on it.
I tried pictures of fish, of shells, of mermaids, of seahorses. It was all just too "cutesy". So I started small. I knew I liked having this tray on the counter. My dad brought me driftwood. I found the "coral" at the Goodwill. I had a start. I liked the more natural elements that were the foundation and so I added a plant (there is a skylight and this plant loves it). But I still needed more...it's a big bathroom.
I needed pictures, but couldn't find any that didn't clash with the wall paper. I decided shells would do just fine. It was easy gluing them on paper and putting them in the frames.
So, things were progressing, but I need some height in the corner to offset the mirror. I was pretty sure that Home Goods would have something. I was right. They had these guys:
The rest just all kind of came together after that. I love the mirror, sink and ladder style towel holder. The reclaimed look wood panels are throughout the house - such a nice touch. It needed something under the towels, so I made the bench from an old garden stool. Just some new paint, top it off with an old shelf and it was just what I needed for toiletries! It has a very spa feeling (my husband loves taking a bath in here - can you blame him?).
I guess it's true...you can never have too much beach in your life.
All my best,
